Call for Papers for Travel Grant
(Travel Grant for Non-Japanese Young Scholars from Overseas)

The International Liaison Committee of the Japan Sociological Society (JSS) has established a travel-grant program to promote internationalization of its activities. It is aimed to help non-Japanese young scholars from abroad to participate in the JSS annual meeting in Japan. The program can provide a great opportunity for them to present their research findings and to exchange ideas with sociologists in Japan. The 82nd annual meeting of the JSS will be held at Rikkyo University in Tokyo, Japan, on October 11 and 12, 2009 (http://english.rikkyo.ac.jp).  A travel grant will be up to fifty thousand (50,000) yen each, and the number of awards will be up to six. Limited financial assistance for accommodation and travels expense between the airport and the hotel in Japan will also be provided.

 

1. Eligibility of application
An applicant for a travel grant has to meet the following conditions: 
 (1) He/she has to be a member of his/her own national sociological association or equivalent.
 (2) He/she has to have a master's degree obtained after 1999, or being 35 years old and younger at the time of the meeting.
 (3) He/she is not a Japanese citizen.
 (4) He/she has to be living and working (or studying if the applicant is a student) in the country outside Japan. (Those whose permanent address is in Japan are not eligible for application.)
Although all qualified candidates can apply, Asian nationalities other than Japanese who reside in Asian countries other than Japan will be given priority.

 

2.Application
An applicant must send the JSS office the following three items, (1) an application Form for Travel Grant ( application form for travel grant 2009.doc),  (2) a one-page Abstract, and (3) a two-page detailed summary of his/her paper. 3. Application Deadline: June 20, 2009, 23:59 (Tokyo, GMT+9:00) by e-mail
Please send applications to jss@wwwsoc.nii.ac.jp by the deadline. All three application materials should be received no later than June 20, 2009. Decisions about travel grant will be made by July 31, 2009.

 

4. Successful applicants are required to submit the following three items in order to receive the grant: (1) a letter of agreement stating that s/he will present a paper at the conference, (2) a membership application for the JSS, and (3) a travel itinerary and air-ticket stubs.  Regarding the item 2, every presenter at the conference has to be a member of the JSS, but membership fee for the first year and the annual conference fee are exempted for grant winners.
Winners of travel grants will make 15-minute presentations at the session in the JSS either in English or Japanese. They are expected to prepare 30 copies of the summaries of their papers.
