Call for Papers
The International Journal of Japanese Sociology (IJJS), the official journal of the Japan Sociological Society, invites anybody who is engaged in sociology, Japanese Studies or related fields, to submit manuscripts for its upcoming volumes. Maximum of 8000 words. No particular deadline is set. In the case that the manuscript is ready for publication on submission, a letter of acceptance will be sent within one month.
Anybody is eligible to submit manuscripts to the International Journal of Japanese Sociology. Contributions are considered for publication only on the understanding that they are not simultaneously under consideration elsewhere, that they are the original work of the authors and that any previous form of publication or any current consideration in other languages is disclosed.
Submission of manuscripts
- Manuscripts should be written in English and be submitted to the Editorial Office: Japan Sociological Society, Department of Sociology, The University of Tokyo, 7-3-1 Hongo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 113-0033, Japan (Tel: +81-3-5841-8933; Fax: +81-3-5841-8932). Manuscripts can also be submitted as an attached MSWord or text file of an e-mail to the Editorial Office (jss@wwwsoc.nii.ac.jp)
- Manuscripts should be typed or printed, double spaced on either A4 (297×210mm) or letter (279×216mm) size paper, using ample margins. Manuscripts should consists of a maximum of 8,000 words including tables, figures, notes and references. Manuscripts for review will not be returned.
- Once an article has been accepted, authors should provide a copy of the final accepted version of the article in an assigned electric text form.
- All authors should provide a covering letter indicating their telephone number, fax number and email address plus full address details of the author checking the proofs (if different)
- Three copies of the manuscript should be provided. The first page of text should include only the title of the manuscript,the name(s) of the author(s) and the institutional affiliation of the author(s).
- Each manuscript must be accompanied by an abstract of up to 250 words.
- A maximum of three keywords should be listed in order of importance under the abstract.
- Authors should supply a running head (short title) of no more than 50 characters (including spaces).
- Tables and figures should be clearly laid out on separate sheets and numbered in Arabic numerals in order of appearance in the text. Their approximate location in the text should be clearly indicated. Figures should be printed from a good quality laser printer or clearly drawn using dark black ink.
Notes
Notes should be limited to an absolute minimum and should appear in a section at the end of the article. References to notes should be numbered consecutively in the main body of the article.
References
References should be indicated in the manuscript using the following format. The full list of references should be given in alphabetical order, on a separate sheet at the end of the article.
- When the author’s name is in the text, indicate only the year of publication after the name: Call (1988). When the author’s name is not in the text: (Call 1988).
- Pagination is to follow the year of publication: (Seltzer, 1991: 896).
- If the manuscript lists more than one publication by the same author, the publications should be distinguished in the following manner: 1969a, 1969b, 1969c.
- To list multiple authors in the same section of the text: (Dimaggio, 1991; Rohlen, 1974).
- For Japanese book titles, capitalize only the first letter of the title. Please add a brief English translation after the title in parenthesis. For name of publishers, capitalize all beginning letters, as indicated in the examples below.
- Titles of books and names of journals should be indicated
in italic (or with an underline).
- An online article that has not yet been published in an issue (therefore has no volume, issue or page numbers) can be cited by its Digital Object Identifier (DOI). The DOI will remain valid and allow an article to be tracked even after its allocation to an issue.

Proofs
Authors will receive proofs of their article and are required to correct and return them to the Publisher before the date specified in the accompanying letter.
Offprints
The corresponding author of each article will receive 3 free copies of the journal issue in which the article appears. Offprints may be ordered online at authors’ own expense.

Costs charged to authors
Submission fee: Those contributors who are neither a member of
the Japan Sociological Society, nor a to-be-member with its
annual membership fee of that year paid, have to pay the amount
below according to their category. Reviewing process will start
only after the fee is paid.

Corrections: The amount by which the cost of the author’s alterations to the proofs (excluding correction of typesetter’s errors) exceeds 10% of the composition of the text or production of the artwork may be recharged to the author at the Editor’s discretion.
Rewriting of articles into English: If extensive rewriting is necessary,
it will be carried out by the copyeditor and costs will
be recharged to authors.
Redrawing of figures: If the standard of artwork supplied is
unacceptable for publication, the cost of redrawing and/or relabeling
the artwork will be recharged to authors.
Copyright
Authors publishing in the Journal will be asked to sign an Exclusive Licence Form. In signing the form it is assumed that authors have obtained permission to use any copyrighted or previously published material. All authors must read and agree to the conditions outlined in the form, and must sign the form or agree that the corresponding author can sign on their behalf.
