Mina Hattori
President
Japan Comparative Education Society

I am Mina Hattori, and I am honored to be appointed the 17th President of the Japan Comparative Education Society. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my warmest regards to all of our members. The Society's secretariat will be located at Nagoya University for the next three years. In the past, Nagoya University served as the secretariat from 2001-2004, and Professor Toru Umakoshi served as the 12th President.

Since the inauguration of the presidency at the 59th Annual Conference of the Japan Comparative Education Society held at Sophia University on June 17-18 and 24-25, the weight of responsibility has grown more as time goes by. When I think of the outstanding achievements of the past presidents, I feel as if I am losing my footing. However, I try to live up to the expectations of those who encouraged me to move forward. I intend to do my best to carry on the legacy of knowledge that the Society has accumulated while learning from the ground up myself. I sincerely ask for the guidance and encouragement of all members.

I would like to carry out our activities smoothly in managing the society. We would like to invite the active participation of our members in our activities. While we try to transform to meet the changing needs of the new era, we will also continue the good traditions of the society to create an enjoyable and warm environment together.

The Japan Comparative Education Society will celebrate its 60th anniversary at the end of March 2025. Since higher education worldwide is now measured by "global standards," the state of knowledge, especially in the humanities and social sciences, has been questioned unexpectedly. We seem to have been forced to "reflect" on the state of the academic world. I have learned immensely from comparative education researchers to understand the world's diversity, including how to overcome my ignorance. JCES has allowed me to grow not only as a researcher but also as a person. I am sure there are others like me.

As the future of academia stands at a critical juncture, I would like to emphasize the significance and depth of the field of comparative education while rethinking to whom we need to transmit our knowledge and experience. I want to fulfill my responsibilities as President to ensure that comparative education remains an academic discipline that provides us the foundation to live powerfully in this unstable and fragile world. I will do my best to pass on the precious bonds I have inherited to future generations in the best possible form, and I sincerely ask our members to walk with me for the next three years.

Fortunately, the world is reopening after the COVID-19 pandemic, and many activities are restarting. Face-to-face conferences are back on track, and overseas research that had been stalled is now resuming. We are still in difficult times, but I hope we can manage the conference in the new era. We draw on the many lessons learned and insights gained from the COVID-19 pandemic to survive cheerfully through these times. Thank you in advance for your continued support.
